Thread Presentation
Product descriptions differ between manufacturers. We try to use the following terms consistently:
Thread Thickness
Generally, the lower the thread number, the thicker the thread, but manufacturers’ estimates vary! (3, 4, 5, 6, 8, 9, 10, 12, 13, 15, 16, 20, 25, 30, 35, 40, 50, 100, 120, 200, single filaments). For example, Madeira Classic 60’s rayons are too fine for most embroidery, Classic 40’s and 30’s are OK for machine embroidery.
Shade Cards
We will match: fabric, threads, paper/paint samples, and threads on any of the well-known firms’ shade cards. To buy a card: prices of some cards are given in the body of this brochure, postage & packing excluded. Where card numbers or prices are not given, cards are probably difficult or impossible to obtain. To borrow a card: we now charge the full cost of each card that we lend out. Refunds will be made if the card(s) are returned in good condition within a fortnight, together with the original invoice.
Book Searches
We have been quite successful at tracking down out-of-print and second-hand needlecraft books, both in this country and abroad, for a small charge reflecting the degree of difficulty encountered in finding and obtaining the book. Contact us at sales@silkenstrands.co.uk and we can usually give you an approximate price and the condition of located books once they are found.

We have speedy links with many UK, American and Australian publishers. Please ‘phone for our current booklist (50p), or explore our website. Single 40p
The ideal answer to the problem of where to store your threads when they are not in use. These boxes are suitable for all types of machine thread – on reels and even on 1000m spools – as well as for the hand embroidery threads that you have re-wound onto cards.
The double-sided box has 23 individual compartments on each side and there is a section on each side for thimbles, needles, scissors, and even for un-pickers! Each section is 8cm long , 3.5cm deep, and 3.8cm wide.
A carrying handle makes the boxes convenient for transport at home or to Guild meetings and workshops.

Madeira have a collection of threads under the label Madeira Thread Treasure Chest. This consists of a set of three wood-effect or white melamine type drawers containing: 180 reels of rayon in solid colours, variegated, ombre, pot pouri, 10 reels of metallic, 4 large reels of Bobbin thread, a colour chart converting other suppliers’ colour names or numbers to Madeira, a seam ripper and thread snips.

PACKS
Say how much you want to pay and we will make up mystery bargain packs for you. Whilst we will obviously include some of our discontinued or slower-moving lines, we will always try to put in colours or threads that you particularly want. You will always get threads of greater value than you have paid for and a good variety of different and less usual threads. NB: with reels at £1.75 minimum, there aren’t many reels in a £5.00 pack!
Please indicate whether hand / machine and which colours and whether you want beads, sequins, fabrics, etc, included.
